Everyone faces moments when their own strength is not enough. Whether you are dealing with illness, grief, financial pressure, or spiritual exhaustion, God’s Word offers a wellspring of strength. These verses are not empty encouragement—they are promises from the Almighty God who keeps every word He speaks.
Old Testament Verses About Strength
Isaiah 40:31
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (KJV)
This is one of the most beloved promises in Scripture. The word “wait” does not mean passive inactivity. It means to look expectantly to God, trusting His timing and His power. When we wait on Him, He replaces our exhaustion with His limitless strength.
Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (KJV)
God is not a distant source of strength. He is “very present”—immediately available in your moment of need. He is both the shelter you run to and the power that sustains you.
Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” (KJV)
Strength and courage are possible because of God’s unfailing presence. He goes before you, beside you, and behind you. He will never leave.
Nehemiah 8:10
“The joy of the LORD is your strength.” (KJV)
True strength is not gritting your teeth and trying harder. It flows from the joy that comes from knowing God—His character, His promises, and His love for you.
New Testament Verses About Strength
Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (KJV)
This verse is often quoted but sometimes misunderstood. Paul wrote this from prison. He was not talking about athletic victories or career success. He was saying that Christ gives strength to endure any circumstance—abundance or need, freedom or chains.
2 Corinthians 12:9–10
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” (KJV)
This is a radical truth. God’s power shows up most clearly when we are weakest. When you have nothing left to give, His grace is enough. Paul actually learned to boast in his weaknesses because they became the stage for God’s power.
Ephesians 6:10
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.” (KJV)
Notice this does not say “be strong in yourself.” Our strength comes from being “in the Lord”—drawing from His inexhaustible power, not our limited resources.
Isaiah 41:10
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (KJV)
Three promises in one verse: I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you. Whatever you face, God has committed Himself to sustaining you through it.
How to Apply These Verses
- Memorise them. Having Scripture stored in your heart means it is available when you need it most—at 3 AM, in a hospital room, during a crisis.
- Pray them back to God. Turn these promises into prayers: “Lord, You said Your strength is made perfect in weakness. I am weak right now. Show Your power in my situation.”
- Share them with others. When someone you know is struggling, send them a verse of strength. Let God’s Word do the encouraging.
- Believe them. These are not motivational quotes. They are promises from the Creator of the universe. Trust them as fact.
When You Feel Weakest
If you are in a season of weakness right now, take heart. God’s strength is not diminished by your weakness—it is displayed through it. Lean on Him, trust His Word, and watch Him sustain you in ways you could not sustain yourself.
