Most Christians know they should share their faith. But many feel paralysed by fear—fear of rejection, fear of saying the wrong thing, or fear of not knowing enough. The good news is that evangelism is not about having all the answers. It is about pointing people to the One who does.
Why Share Your Faith?
Jesus gave every believer a clear mission: “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15 KJV). This is not a suggestion for professional missionaries—it is a command for every follower of Christ.
People around you are facing eternity without Christ. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?” (Romans 10:13–14 KJV). Someone needs to tell them. That someone might be you.
Overcoming the Fear of Evangelism
Remember: It Is God’s Work
You are not responsible for saving anyone. Only the Holy Spirit can convict hearts and draw people to Christ (John 16:8; John 6:44). Your job is to be faithful in sharing. God handles the results.
You Know Enough
You do not need a seminary degree. If you know that you are a sinner saved by grace through faith in Christ, you know enough to share the gospel. The man born blind in John 9 said simply, “One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25 KJV). Your testimony is powerful.
Love Casts Out Fear
When you truly care about someone’s eternal destiny, love will overcome your fear. Ask God to give you genuine compassion for the people in your life who do not know Christ.
Practical Approaches to Sharing Your Faith
1. Build Genuine Relationships
People are more receptive to the gospel from someone who genuinely cares about them. Be a good neighbour, a faithful friend, and a servant. Let your life create opportunities for conversation.
2. Share Your Personal Testimony
A personal testimony is difficult to argue against. Share three things:
- What your life was like before Christ
- How you came to faith
- How your life has changed since
Keep it brief, honest, and focused on Christ rather than yourself.
3. Learn a Simple Gospel Presentation
Know how to clearly explain these core truths:
- God loves you and created you for a relationship with Him (John 3:16)
- Sin separates us from God (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23)
- Jesus paid the penalty for our sin by dying on the cross and rising again (Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4)
- Salvation is received by faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8–9; John 1:12)
4. Ask Good Questions
Questions open doors that statements cannot. Consider asking:
- “Do you have any spiritual background?”
- “Have you ever thought about what happens after we die?”
- “If God asked you why He should let you into heaven, what would you say?”
5. Be Ready to Listen
Evangelism is not a monologue. Listen to people’s questions, concerns, and objections. Show genuine interest in their perspective. “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards” (Proverbs 29:11 KJV).
6. Use Scripture
The Word of God has power that your words alone do not have. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17 KJV). When possible, share the actual words of Scripture.
What to Do After Sharing
- Pray for the person. Pray that the Holy Spirit would continue working in their heart.
- Follow up. Check in, invite them to church, offer to study the Bible together.
- Trust God with the outcome. Some plant, some water, but God gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6–7).
Sharing your faith is one of the greatest privileges of the Christian life. Do not let fear rob you of the joy of seeing someone come to know Christ. Start with prayer, open your mouth, and let God do the rest.
