In an age of scepticism, many people ask: “Can we really trust the Bible?” It is a fair question. If the Bible is truly God’s Word, it should be able to withstand scrutiny. And it does—remarkably well. The evidence for the Bible’s reliability is stronger than for any other ancient document in history.
Manuscript Evidence
Overwhelming Numbers
The New Testament has more manuscript support than any other ancient text. There are over 5,800 Greek manuscripts, over 10,000 Latin manuscripts, and thousands more in other languages. By comparison, Homer’s Iliad has fewer than 2,000 copies, and most other ancient works survive in fewer than a dozen.
Early Dates
The earliest New Testament fragments date to within decades of the original writing. The John Rylands Papyrus (P52), containing portions of John’s Gospel, dates to approximately AD 125—less than 30 years after John wrote it. No other ancient text has such a small gap between composition and earliest copies.
Consistency
Despite thousands of manuscripts copied by hand over centuries, the New Testament text is remarkably consistent. Scholars estimate that 99.5% of the text is established beyond any doubt. The variations that exist are minor—spelling differences, word order changes—and none affect any doctrine of the Christian faith.
Archaeological Evidence
Archaeology has consistently confirmed the historical accuracy of the Bible. Consider these examples:
- The Hittite civilisation, once dismissed as fictional because it was mentioned only in the Bible, was confirmed by archaeological discoveries in the early 1900s
- The Pool of Bethesda (John 5:2) was discovered by archaeologists exactly where John described it
- The inscription of Pontius Pilate was found in Caesarea, confirming the existence of the governor who sentenced Jesus
- The Dead Sea Scrolls (discovered 1947) contained Old Testament texts nearly identical to copies made a thousand years later, proving the accuracy of transmission
No archaeological finding has ever contradicted a biblical claim. As archaeologist Nelson Glueck stated, “No archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference.”
Prophetic Evidence
The Bible contains hundreds of specific prophecies that were fulfilled exactly as predicted—many of them centuries after they were written. Consider the prophecies about Jesus Christ alone:
- Born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14 → Matthew 1:22–23)
- Born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2 → Matthew 2:1)
- Ministry in Galilee (Isaiah 9:1–2 → Matthew 4:12–16)
- Betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12 → Matthew 26:15)
- Crucified with criminals (Isaiah 53:12 → Luke 23:33)
- Lots cast for His garments (Psalm 22:18 → John 19:23–24)
- Resurrected from the dead (Psalm 16:10 → Acts 2:31)
The mathematical probability of one person fulfilling even eight of these prophecies by chance has been calculated at 1 in 10 to the 17th power. Fulfilled prophecy is powerful evidence that the Bible is exactly what it claims to be: the Word of God.
Internal Consistency
The Bible was written by approximately 40 authors over a span of 1,500 years, on three continents, in three languages. Yet it tells one unified story—God’s plan to redeem humanity through Jesus Christ. This level of coherence across such diversity of authors and time periods points to a single, divine Author behind the human writers.
Changed Lives
Perhaps the most compelling evidence for the Bible’s reliability is its power to transform lives. For two thousand years, the Bible has taken broken people and made them whole, given hope to the hopeless, and turned sinners into saints. As the Bible itself declares, “The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword” (Hebrews 4:12 KJV).
You Can Trust the Bible
The evidence is clear: the Bible is historically accurate, archaeologically verified, prophetically confirmed, internally consistent, and life-transforming. You can build your life on it with complete confidence. “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isaiah 40:8 KJV).
